Tell us about your pet’s breed, age, and how they became a part of your family.
Ato was born on September 3rd, so he will be one year old soon. He is half Maltese and half Poodle — a toy-sized Maltipoo. He became part of our family last December. At the time, I was recovering from a severe knee injury, and we thought that maybe a dog could bring a little more joy into our lives — and he definitely did!
What does your pet mean to you as a teammate and companion?
He is my best friend! He has made such a big difference in my life. I’m so much more relaxed when he is around, and I truly believe that, in some way, he has helped me heal. Since Ato came into my life, my recovery has improved significantly.
How has your pet supported you through your professional journey?
He has helped me focus on things outside of sports, instead of thinking about my athletic career all the time. That has improved my overall wellbeing and, in turn, also helped me perform better as an athlete.
How has your pet supported your mental health as a professional athlete?
Ato has brought so much more meaning and joy into my life. He has helped me realize that there is so much more to life than just results and performances. That perspective has made me a much happier person.
How do you approach nutrition as a professional athlete and why do you want the same benefits for your pet?
Nutrition is key. Having enough high-quality energy makes a tremendous difference in how you feel and perform. Ever since I truly understood this in my own career, my performance has improved. I want Ato to live a long, happy, and healthy life so that we can make many great memories together. That’s why good nutrition is a top priority for him as well.
